Fifteen youngsters gathered today on another scorching hot morning, and considering it is half term, that’s actually quite a good turnout.

Younger brother of Wyatt, Otis joined us today to learn the basics and after a lengthy session of this and that, he managed a game with Zayd… very well done!

Card Tricks

With the help of some pre-printed instructive chess cards, [trying something different to make learning more fun], we engaged the gathering by asking them which specific topic they would like to choose, and then invited them to pick a card related to that chosen topic. We began the session with a focus on ‘Tactics’, which led to the selection of a card that explained the concept of the ‘PIN’. To illustrate this, an example of both a Pin and a Skewer was clearly demonstrated on the display board for everyone to see and understand better.

A second topic focused on the ‘Opening for White,’ which led Jack to pick out the ‘London Opening’ card. This particular opening was then thoroughly explained once more on the demonstration board, providing additional clarity and insight into its strategic advantages and typical moves.

With my thanks to Jon Catchpole, along with the valuable assistance of Samuel Gorsuch and John Heath, they provided expert guidance and support to Miles, Jonah, Wyatt, and Kieran, who were part of the advanced pool of players. Their combined expertise helped these players refine their skills and elevate their game to a higher level.

Good wins today in that advanced section for Jonah which pulls him up into second place behind Kieran.

Next week, I would like Miles, Wyatt, Kieran, and Constance to join the main ensemble and participate in a series of ladder and knockout games. It will be quite interesting to observe whether their time spent in this advanced group over the past few weeks has helped to improve their chess skills and overall gameplay. This opportunity will allow us to assess their progress and see how much they have developed in terms of strategy, tactics, and confidence at the board.

Wins for Thomas, Michal, Oscar, Zayd, and Lewis, showcasing their skill and determination throughout the competition. It was a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience for Otis, Lewis, Michal, Miles, and Kieran as they faced off against the tutors, pushing themselves to improve and learn from the tough matchups.

Beginners

Zayd confidently leads the way with strong determination, while Michael follows closely behind, not far off at all.

Intermediates

Lewis leads the charge at the forefront, with Miles, Oscar, Eden and Michal closely following and maintaining a steady pace to stay in touch.

Last week Puzzle Answer

My thoughts only, but with precise play, Black is poised to secure a win after this sequence:
