You can definitely count on the fact that holidays usually mean family activities take top priority, which is why we see a lower number this May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Today, there are just 13 juniors participating, reflecting how many are likely spending time with their families instead.
A very warm welcome to Thomas, who has joined our club for the very first time. He is a young beginner full of enthusiasm and determination, showing great potential and promise for the future.
The good news for many of those who attended was that they had the valuable benefit of receiving one-to-one tuition from some of our top and most experienced tutors, which greatly enhanced their learning experience.

My sincere thanks extend to Jon Catchpole and John Heath for their incredibly valuable and much appreciated assistance provided today.
On the Display board this week, I carefully illustrated the potential dangers and risks associated with moving the f2 or f7 pawns too early in the game. Additionally, I provided a detailed demonstration of the Fishing Pole Tactic, explaining how it can be effectively executed and the consequences it can have during play.
The f2 and f7 weakness

Fool’s Mate is the quickest checkmate possible in chess, occurring in just two moves. It happens only if White or Black make critical opening errors by moving f2 or f7 too early, which is why it is called Fool’s Mate.
This mate can be delivered by Black in two moves, though White can achieve a similar checkmate in three moves.
Fishing Pole Trap
The Fishing Pole Trap is widely regarded as one of the most straightforward and effective traps that novices often fall victim to. Many players who are not well-versed with the mechanics of the fishing pole frequently find themselves ensnared in several different ways, leading to an unexpectedly quick and sudden end to their gameplay experience. This trap’s simplicity and effectiveness make it a common pitfall for beginners.
Ladder and Knockout remains fairly static this week
Due to lack of numbers there wasn't a great deal of Ladder or knockout games played.
One Ladder game was played between Eden and Lewis, in which Lewis won.

There were wins in friendly matches for Fin, Michal, Lewis, Miles and Wyatt.
Jon Catchpole's Puzzle Corner

White has just played Ba6, why is this a Mistake??
Think of the tactic - removing the defender.

- Can White to move win?
- Can Black to move win?
A lesson in Opposition
