A new world record was set for Ferndown Junior Chess as an impressive total of 22 enthusiastic members tuned in to participate in a thrilling and intense chess monster session. The event was ably supported and guided by the dedicated Jon, who provided expert assistance throughout, and was briefly joined by a new volunteer, John Heath, who contributed to making the session even more engaging and successful.
We warmly welcomed several new faces this time around, including Adah, Harrison, Aurelia, and Felicity. All of them are relatively beginners to chess, but with some dedicated guidance and support over the coming weeks, they have the potential to develop into truly excellent players.

Happy Birthday tomorrow to our senior player Charlene (seen below)
Have a lovely day.

Don’t Forget it’s Mother’s day tomorrow!

Scholars Mate
Today for mainly our beginners/intermediates I gave a brief overview of Scholars Mate, it is a well-known chess tactic used by some students, while others may not even be aware of its existence or know how to effectively counter it during a game. This opening move is often employed to quickly checkmate an opponent, catching many beginners off guard. Understanding Scholars Mate is important because it highlights common early-game mistakes and teaches players how to defend against such swift strategies. By studying this tactic, learners can improve their overall chess skills and avoid falling into this trap themselves.
What Is The Scholar’s Mate?
The Scholar’s Mate is common among beginners, and most players have fallen for it or won a game with it at one point in their lives. It ends the game after only four moves by attacking the weak f-pawn with a bishop and a queen. The f7-pawn is considered weak because it is solely defended by the king, and for this reason it is a common target in many opening traps.
Understand the concept of this tricky opening or your game will sink without trace!

How To Defend Against The Scholar's Mate
If you are familiar with the Scholar's Mate and you notice your opponent is trying to use it against you, it is quite easy to defend against it. There are three main options to avoid falling victim to it. Let's look at them one by one. Remember, this is our starting position:
The move g6 is the most sensible response to the threat of a Scholar's Mate. It frees up the g7-square for Black's bishop to create a solid structure on the kingside and to put the dark-squared bishop on its longest diagonal. It also starts clearing the way for Black to castle. Besides all of that, it threatens the white queen, forcing White to move their lady away from danger.

Another option to defend against this attack is to move your queen to the e7-square. This move protects the f7-pawn, develops the queen, and adds another defender to the e5-pawn. This move comes with two drawbacks: it blocks the dark-squared bishop and brings out the queen too early.

Many games played today with wins for Arnav, Wyatt, Jonah, Rowan, Constance, Isaac, Felicity, Aurelia, Tishi and Adah.
Wyatt takes over the lead with Gagan and Kieran close behind. Michal slips down the order as he couldn't make it today after falling ill, we hope he gets better soon and comes back next week. That is the first Saturday he's missed in over a year - that deserves a round of applause.
