An all-time record of 21 juniors showed up today, which is absolutely amazing, but I definitely need a lie down and rest after such an energetic morning!

A very warm welcome to our newest members Oscar, Jack, Monty, and Chester. It’s truly wonderful to have you all join us and become part of the club. We are also delighted to see Austin and Arthur making a return visit; it’s great to have familiar faces back with us once again.

After an in-depth discussion on the various fork types, we officially kicked off the exciting ‘Climb a Mountain’ knockout competition and continued on with several more engaging ladder games.

Jon and I spent a significant amount of time working closely with both beginners and advanced players, ensuring that everyone received the attention and guidance they needed regardless of their skill level.

Once again, my thanks go to Jon for helping out.

A FORK in chess is when one piece attacks two pieces at the same time, for example:-

The knight checks the King, if the king moves to d5 it will attack both Knight and Bishop winning at least one of them, a King FORK

Showing additional examples of forks involving the Pawn, Bishop, Knight, Rook, and Queen, the group was then asked to identify and find the various different types of forks illustrated in the diagram below. This exercise aimed to help them better understand the multiple ways forks can occur in a game.

In this diagram there are multiple FORKS available, can you spot all 10?

With White to play, where is the:-

Pawn Fork?

Bishop Fork?

Rook Fork?

With Black to play, where is the:-

Climb the Mountain

Our winning mountaineers for today included Chester, Isaac, Wyatt, Keiran, Zayd, Michal, Lewis, and Gagan, all of whom demonstrated skill and determination throughout the challenge.

So, when observed from a greater distance, the entire scene now clearly depicts the climbers steadily making significant progress as they ascend the mountain.

Ladder Tournament

Victories in the Ladder competition were claimed by Constance, Eden, Gagan, Michal, Zayd, and Arnav.

Well earned draws were recorded in the matches involving Tishi, Arthur, Oscar, and Jonah, with each player demonstrating good skills and determination throughout the games.

As a result, with names tied in points arranged alphabetically, the Ladder showing the top 16 positions now appears as follows:

An absolutely fantastic and engaging 2 hours filled with enthusiastic juniors passionately playing chess and fully immersing themselves in the game,

A big thank you goes out to all the Mums and Dads who generously take the time to bring their children along and support Jon and I wholeheartedly.

Looking forward to seeing all of you and even more new faces next week.
