On a warm sunny day we had 10 juniors eager to learn and play chess, we welcome another new member Ayan who may only be 6 yrs but has a strong appetite for the game, he should do well. Round Robin games were played with 10 mins each on the clock, others with a short time left before their hour was up, played some suicide chess, great fun, it does have a point to it, in that it’s reverse psychology regarding the taking and positioning of pieces.

Todays main theme was being a “Pirate of the Chess Board”, in other words gambits that rob, pillage and plunder your opponent. Various gambits were shown and discussed which raised not only eyebrows but also a few ooohs and ahhs, as surprised moves were made. Gambits or Traps may not be sound and there are various moves to counter, but at beginners and intermediate levels, they can create easy quick wins and are good fun.

The Kingside Attack
Another tactic in chess is the Kingside attack, here is an example of a game played between Vo Scheve and Teichmann in Berlin 1907, a Giuoco Piano or Italian Game
The Kingside attack is attractive because it involves combination play with gambits, sacrifices and surprise moves. It aims for a quick checkmate, but when and how do you start the attack. For full details on this, click on the link below:-
