Great turnout today of 12 juniors, we welcome new beginner Jake who with Mum is learning from scratch, I hope he learnt enough today to encourage him to return in the future.

On Thursday afternoon(2 – 4pm) we had 3 juniors and 5 adults enjoying some banter and chess in Ferndown Library. If you have the time, pop along, as a bonus the Library serve Tea, Coffee and biscuits all afternoon free of charge!

Birthday Wishes this week to Rowan on the 2nd July – we miss you!

This weeks theme is not wins or loses, but DRAWS

There are a few ways in which a game can be drawn:-

  1. Insufficient pieces left on the board ie:-only 2 Kings and a Bishop, King against King, King and Knight against King
  2. By agreement – you or your opponent could offer a draw
  3. If the same position occurs 3 times during a game, a player can claim a draw
  4. 50 move rule – if no pawn has been moved and no capture of a piece after 50 moves by each player the game is drawn
  5. Stalemate – It is a draw when a player whose turn it is to move is not in check but cannot move without going into check
  6. Perpetual check – repeating the same move over at least 3 times

If Black moves the Queen to e3, not checking the King, the white king has nowhere to go – Stalemate, a draw.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If white leaves the Queen on f7 and moves the King to get closer, the black King has nowhere to go – stalemate.

to avoid this, keep the Queen on the 7th rank but further away, ie:- e7,d7, c7 etc

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

An example of Perpetual check – White is ready to mate the Black King but the Black Queen can force a draw by continually checking the White King – draw!

Game of the Day - Lewis v Gagan

A good game played at a steady pace, plenty of thought from both players, a few mistakes but that's expected at this level. Take heed and move on!

Latest Ladder positions after this weeks games and Quiz results.

Are you a climber?

or a faller?

Wins today for Michal, Jacob, Anusas, Advik and Gagan.

Quiz results;-

Red Zone - Gagan 3 points, Constance, Advik and Lewis all got second question wrong - 2 points ea

Green Zone - Michal 2 points with 8 correct from 12, Anusas 1 point with 4 correct from 12, Eden had the wrong question sheet altogether, a very difficult one in fact but I will award 1 point for effort.

Michal played Constance on Thursday as a pre-game for today in Constance absence, which resulted in a win for Michal (3 points).

So here are the standings, Gagan returns to the top spot, with Advik, Constance and Michal very close behind.
